Hi there!

This will be my first post and I'm really really passionate to share all my secrets about Maastricht. But before we start, I would like to introduce myself first by a small story.

My name is Sander and if you live or ever lived in Maastricht, this bridge will be a general look to you. This bridge is called the 'Sint Servaasbrug' and it is one of the 5 bridges connecting the 2 parts of Maastricht. This bridge is the spot where my burning passion for Maastricht really started. That is why it has a very special place in my heart.

I can still remember the old days when I walked over the bridge with my father to get an ice cream at the kiosk (the small general store), we did this every weekend. I dont know, but somehow, the sun always shone. The sun rays reflected beautifully on the dark colored water. I was fascinated by it and it is still one of my favorite places in Maastricht to dream away for a moment. Although he is not really secret.

A little bit of history!

The Sint Servaasbrug is named after the Armenian bishop Saint Servatius. He came to West Europe in the 4th century to spread the Christianity. This brigde is a replacement of the 'Roman bridge' which collapsed in the year 1275 from the weight of a large procession. Its replacement, the present bridge, was built somewhat to the north of the older crossing between 1280 and 1298.

Some good spots?

If you are in search for cigarettes no worries, the owner of the 'kiosk' is an expert in tobacco. Trust me, he is doing this for a long time! If you're looking for some nice views you could walk down the stairs at the middle of the bridge. You will arrive at a lovely pier.

There is also a very authentic Dutch snackbar at the east side of the bridge. It is called 'snackbar de awwe brug' (translated: snackbar the old bridge), ask for the 'friet zuurvlees', it is a real Maastricht dish, you won't regret it.

You also could consider to visit Lunchroom 'de Piepenhoes' it is a quiet small lunchroom with a nice big terrace. 'De Piepenhoes' is located at the corner of the west side of the bridge. In my opinion a lovely spot to relief and watch people come by. They serve the original authentic Blance Dael craft coffee. If you like coffee don't even hesitate to ask for a cup of ...!
